Care information

This is an unidentified *Ardisia* species collected from the Sumatera Barat (West Sumatra) region of Indonesia. It is a small tropical shrub or subshrub that grows upright with leathery green leaves and a compact form. Like other tropical *Ardisia*, it prefers warm, humid conditions and bright, indirect light. Best suited for terrariums, grow cabinets, or tropical plant collections.

You will receive a **rooted plant**, grower's choice. It will be similar in size and form to the one pictured but not the exact plant. Shipped bare-root or in moss depending on conditions.

**Light Requirements:** Moderate to bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun.
**Humidity Requirements:** High, 65–90%.
**Temperature Range:** 68–80°F (20–27°C). Keep above 60°F (16°C).
**Growth Habit:** Upright subshrub. Grows vertically with minimal branching when young.
**Soil:** Moist, well-draining tropical mix—sphagnum, perlite, fine bark.
**pH:** Slightly acidic to neutral, 5.5–7.0.
**Size:** Moderate grower. Probably stays under 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) tall in cultivation, though it is easy to keep it pruned to size.

Plant Details
Airflow
Medium — Essential for "wetish" setups. Needs regular air exchange or internal circulation fans to prevent water from sitting on leaves, which helps avoid rot and fungal issues.
Family
Primulaceae
Growth strategy
Terrestrial
Humidity
60–80% — Suitable for "open-top" or partially ventilated terrariums. While higher than average household humidity, these plants are adaptable and less prone to leaf melt if the environment fluctuates slightly.
Lighting
Moderate — Prefers bright, filtered, or indirect light. This is the "sweet spot" for most terrarium species; however, direct sun or high-intensity LEDs will scorch delicate juvenile leaves.
PH
5.5–6.5 — Acidic (Optimal): The “Goldilocks” zone for most tropical terrarium plants, including Marcgravia. This range ensures maximum nutrient availability and mimics the natural decomposition of leaf litter on the rainforest floor.

Rooted
Size
Medium
Temperature
65–75°F — Ideal for "Cool-Growers" or highland species. These plants prefer the lower end of the tropical spectrum and may show signs of stress or heat-dropping leaves if temperatures consistently exceed 80°F.
Watering substrate
Damp — These plants love high moisture levels; the substrate should stay wet to the touch at all times but should not be sitting in a stagnant, waterlogged state.
World
Old World — Native to the Eastern Hemisphere: Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and surrounding islands.
