Care information

*Rhipsalis pilocarpa* is an epiphytic jungle cactus with slender, cylindrical stems covered in fine white hairs. Unlike desert cacti, it grows in shaded forests where it trails from trees and rocks, adapting beautifully to hanging pots or mounted culture. Under the right conditions it produces fragrant, starry white flowers followed by red berries. While it thrives in higher humidity, it can also be acclimated to typical household conditions, making it a versatile choice for indoor growing.

You will receive an **unrooted cutting**, grower’s choice. It will be similar in size and form to the one pictured but not the exact plant. Shipped bare-root or in moss depending on conditions.

**Light Requirements:** Bright, indirect light to light shade. Avoid harsh direct sun.
**Humidity Requirements:** Moderate to high, 50–80%. Can be acclimated to household conditions.
**Temperature Range:** 65–85°F (18–29°C). Can handle short dips just below 60°F (16°C).
**Growth Habit:** Epiphytic trailing cactus with cylindrical, hairy stems. Produces fragrant white flowers and red fruits when mature.
**Soil:** Well-draining epiphytic cactus mix with bark, perlite, or coco chips.
**pH:** Slightly acidic to neutral, 5.5–6.5.
**Size:** Stems 2–5 mm thick, trailing extensively; flowers \~2 cm across, followed by small red berries.

Plant Details
Airflow
Medium — Essential for "wetish" setups. Needs regular air exchange or internal circulation fans to prevent water from sitting on leaves, which helps avoid rot and fungal issues.
Family
Cactaceae
Growth strategy
Epiphyte
Humidity
40–60%
Lighting
Bright — Requires high-output lighting to maintain vivid color expression (especially for reds, purples, and variegation) and to ensure shingling habits stay tight and compact.
PH
5.5–6.5 — Acidic (Optimal): The “Goldilocks” zone for most tropical terrarium plants, including Marcgravia. This range ensures maximum nutrient availability and mimics the natural decomposition of leaf litter on the rainforest floor.

Temperature
65–75°F — Ideal for "Cool-Growers" or highland species. These plants prefer the lower end of the tropical spectrum and may show signs of stress or heat-dropping leaves if temperatures consistently exceed 80°F.
Watering substrate
Dry Between — Epiphytic or succulent-type growth that requires the substrate or mounting surface to dry out significantly between mistings to prevent root death.
World
New World — Native to the Western Hemisphere: North, Central, and South America plus the Caribbean
