Care information

*Marcgravia nepenthioides* is a climbing epiphyte native to the humid rainforests of Costa Rica and Panama, where it ascends tree trunks and rocky surfaces in shaded, high-humidity understory environments. In its juvenile form it produces small, rounded to ovate leaves that shingle tightly and flat against the climbing surface. The species name references the unusual nectary-bearing bracts of mature adult growth, which resemble the pitchers of Nepenthes.

You will receive a single cutting, grower's choice. Listing photos are representative of the approximate size and form you will receive.

**Habitat Locality:** Caribbean slope rainforests of Costa Rica and Panama, lowland to premontane zones beneath closed canopy.

**Light Requirements:** Low to moderate indirect light. Avoid direct sun; performs well in terrarium conditions.
**Humidity Requirements:** High, approximately 70 to 90 percent.
**Temperature Range:** 65 to 85°F (18 to 29°C). Keep above 60°F (16°C).
**Growth Habit:** Creeping epiphytic climber; juvenile foliage shingles flat against the climbing surface.
**Soil:** Well-draining epiphytic mix with orchid bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite.
**pH:** Slightly acidic, approximately 5.5 to 6.5.
**Size:** Juvenile leaves typically 1 to 3 cm.

Plant Details
Airflow
Low — Specifically suited for sealed, stagnant environments. These plants do not require active ventilation or fans to prevent bacterial or fungal "melt."
Family
Marcgraviaceae
Growth strategy
Epiphyte
Humidity
80–100% — The "Sweet Spot" for most rare tropicals and shinglers. This high-saturation environment is essential for aerial root attachment to hardscape and ensures that delicate foliage maintains its turgidity and sheen.
Lighting
Moderate — Prefers bright, filtered, or indirect light. This is the "sweet spot" for most terrarium species; however, direct sun or high-intensity LEDs will scorch delicate juvenile leaves.
PH
5.5–6.5 — Acidic (Optimal): The “Goldilocks” zone for most tropical terrarium plants, including Marcgravia. This range ensures maximum nutrient availability and mimics the natural decomposition of leaf litter on the rainforest floor.

Temperature
65–75°F — Ideal for "Cool-Growers" or highland species. These plants prefer the lower end of the tropical spectrum and may show signs of stress or heat-dropping leaves if temperatures consistently exceed 80°F.
Watering substrate
Damp — These plants love high moisture levels; the substrate should stay wet to the touch at all times but should not be sitting in a stagnant, waterlogged state.
World
New World — Native to the Western Hemisphere: North, Central, and South America plus the Caribbean
